You may have heard about hot yoga (or more specifically Bikram Yoga) and you might know it takes place in a room with a high temperature, but what else is there to it? For a long time, I did not know that much about Bikram Yoga myself but after being curious and trying it during a trip to London, England, I got hooked.
Ok so what is Bikram Yoga?
Bikram yoga is a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises taking place during a 90-minute class. You start with one breathing exercise and finish with another. In between, you’ll sweat and you’ll detox like never before because all of this takes place in a heated room (obviously, but it fits to write it). The temperature is around 104 degrees Fahrenheit/40 degrees Celsius and will most likely vary a little bit from class to class depending on the studio, the weather, etc.
How do I get started?
Bikram yoga can be quite costly(worth it though) but most studios operate with an intro-offer so it is definitely worth a try. You’ll get used to it, and if you wish, you can of course rest all class if things get too difficult. The only thing they ask of you is that you stay in the room for the whole class, the whole 90 minutes. But you don’t have to do the postures if you would find them too difficult. And I promise you that if you go regularly you will get used to the heat very quickly.
Give yourself time to learn how to handle the heat
I’ll tell you this that if you have always been someone who has never found it easy to handle heat and if that’s how you see yourself it’s a matter of letting go of who you think of yourself to be. This is something that can be very scary, scary to your ego that is because it means letting go of your old story of who you are which is death to the ego. This principle goes for a lot of other things as well, like learning new languages for example.
Anyhow, don’t be afraid of the heat. Don’t let it keep you from trying something new that could potentially improve your life. It’s really not that bad. It won’t take more than a few regular classes and a bit of determination to get through and get used to.
